Sensory Integration is a specialty area of occupational therapy and is based around the way our brains organize sensory information and responds to sensory stimulation.
Children with autism and developmental disorders often have either over or under reactive sensory system. These issues may manifest in behaviors including rocking, spinning, and hand-flapping. It is believed sensory processing disorders stems from neurological dysfunction within the CNS. Empowered Learning Transformation Centers developed the theory of sensory integration as well as its treatment. With occupational therapy services children with sensory processing disorders or sensory integrative dysfunction can live life to its fullest and learn strategies to regulate their arousal levels.
Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on enabling children with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities to live their lives as independently as possible.
OT can help kiddos with various needs improve their cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor skills as well as enhance their self-esteem and confidence.
Some people are under the assumption that occupational therapy is only for adults because kiddos do not have occupations. This assumption is false because a kiddo’s occupation is playing, learning and activities of daily living.
OT’s can evaluate their school performance, skills for playing and daily activities. They use these evaluation results to compare them to what is developmentally appropriate for their age group.
According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), in addition to dealing with ones physical well-being, OT’s address social, psychological and environmental factors that can affect function and well being. This makes OT a vital part of health care for our kiddos!
