Autism Evaluations
Autism Diagnosis: How do I have my child, or myself, assessed for an autism spectrum disorder?
Autism evaluations can be initiated by parents, or through a referral from your child’s pediatrician or other physician. We will determine if your insurance covers the evaluation prior to scheduling an appointment.
Our multi-disciplinary diagnostics team located onsite in Millstone Township consists of psychologists, psychological associates, and board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs). The autism diagnostic team assesses children and adults from 18 months to 17 years of age using comprehensive evaluation measures including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule- 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) behavioral checklists, structured clinical interviews, and observations to evaluate:
- Developmental and medical history
- Cognitive abilities
- Social skills and development
- Emotional and behavioral functioning
- Communication and language ability
- Adaptive behavior
A parent feedback session is held after your child’s autism diagnostic evaluation. Our team discusses with you our diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations. The team assists you in finding community-based treatment services appropriate for your child’s and family’s needs whether they be with CAC (Children Autism Center), or another community-based provider.
Autism Evaluations for ABA Services at Children’s Autism Center
Our first step in the autism evaluation process for ABA therapy is to meet with our Clinic Director to discuss your child’s health and developmental history as well as your expectations and goals for your child’s therapy. Many parents find it easier to attend this initial meeting without their child present.
After this initial meeting we then schedule a time for a thorough evaluation conducted by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with your child. This evaluation process takes approximately 2 hours and includes the use of the Verbal Behavior Milestone Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MA PP) and the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS). These assessments are typical of most evaluations in order to develop a treatment plan for your child.
Directly following the evaluation, the BCBA develops a comprehensive written report that showing both strengths and areas that need developing in your child. After the report has been completed the BCBA will discuss the assessment findings in detail with you in our center. The results of this written report are used to develop an individualized treatment plan and program for your child. This treatment plan is designed to target specific developing areas in your child and is implemented by our BCBAs, BCaBAs, and our trained ABA therapists in a one-on-one (1:1) ratio at the clinic and/or in a social group setting.
